A 65-year-old man has pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting his then 13-year-old granddaughter in 2018.
A jury had been empanelled in Supreme Court No. 4 last week for the start of the trial on Monday before Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell.
However, before the trial could get off the ground, the accused man admitted that between September 1 and 30, 2018, he committed the acts.
The jury was directed to return a guilty verdict, followed by Principal State Counsel Joyann Catwell’s reading of the facts.
Catwell, who appeared along with State Counsel Eleazer Williams, cited the victim’s mother’s statement, saying that the girl was initially not close to her grandfather but he began calling her around April 2018 to see how she was doing.
He offered to buy some of the girl’s school supplies and did so once. He eventually asked the girl’s mother to allow his granddaughter to spend the day with him during the 2018 summer holidays. She felt it was a chance for the girl to get to know her grandfather better, and the girl also agreed she wanted to go, the prosecutor said.
