Windsor/Bridgetown junction roundabout could begin this year

Ministry of Transport & Works (MTW) officials are hopeful that the construction of a roundabout at the Windsor/Bridgetown St George junction can begin later this year.

Chief Technical Officer Jenifer King gave that update during a press conference on Thursday at the Ministry’s Goddard Building, Haggatt Hall, St Michael office.

“We are hoping to have it start this year. The tender documents are about to go out, and when that tender process is completed in about three to four months, we can start,” King said.

Over the years, multiple collisions have occurred at that junction.

Plans to construct a traffic circle date as far back as 2010.

Deputy Chief Technical Officer (Projects) Dave Scantlebury explained that the process took as long as it did because at that time, the Ministry had to prioritise upgrades to the Warrens area, the ABC Highway and the land acquisition process.

He said that five acres had to be acquired from Barbados Farms Limited and Foursquare Estates at the St George junction before they could move ahead with the construction. This would also ensure that safety and visibility for motorists at the junction would improve.

“It cost approximately $3 million for construction only and approximately $1 million for land acquisition,” Scantlebury said. (TG)
